The other options are sleeper wagons with fans, and simply a seat, the train fares start from just 300THB one way and takes around 12 hours.
Hotels in Chiang Mai are abundant as are simple but clean and well managed guest houses that tend to be centered in the middle of Chiang Mai within the inner City square that is surrounded by moats that form a perfect square mile. Some of the big players in the Hotel Industry have some amazing Hotels such as Four Seasons are able to offer high end customers the ultimate in luxury accommodation.

Motorbike Rental: This is by far the best way to get around the city, which is small and can be explored by motorbike easily. Bike rentals are everywhere (almost every street!) and they are about Baht 150-200 a day.
You can get insurance for an extra Baht 50 a day.
River Travel: The Ping river is 569 km long and a cruise down the waterway is a wonderful way to see the sights and enjoy the evening dusk as it rolls in. Take a boat from the Boat landing at Wat Chaimongkon (Charoen Prathet Rd. opp. Alliance Francaise, Tel. 053-274-822) You can rent a boat for about Baht 200/hour Boats can take up to 15 people.
Tuk Tuks: Tuk-tuks cost about Baht 30 for an average trip in the city but charge a bit more at night.
